Winchester Hospital will join more than 50 organizations nationwide in hosting a “Shine a Light on Lung Cancer” vigil on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The event will take place at 6 p.m. in the second floor lobby of the Winchester Hospital Center for Cancer Care located at 620 Washington St. in Winchester.

Vigils are being coordinated by the Washington, D.C.-based Lung Cancer Alliance throughout the U.S., as well as in Australia, Brazil and Egypt and an American military installation in Kabul, Afghanistan. This is the second time that Winchester Hospital is participating in the effort to raise awareness, honor loved ones and provide hope, compassion and support for the millions touched by this disease each year.

“The Vigils are unique events that provide an opportunity for volunteers to get creative in the way in which they want to help the lung cancer community in their area,” said LCA President & CEO, Laurie Fenton Ambrose. “Messages of hope, support and compassion are conveyed to attendees with the underlying message that ‘No One Deserves to Die’ from lung cancer.” 

The Vigils are designed to unite participants in a national call to action to reduce lung cancer mortality by 50 percent by 2020.

“We’re proud to join the Lung Cancer Alliance in this widespread effort to empower patients in managing their diagnosis and educate at-risk individuals about early detection options,” said Winchester Hospital Oncology Nurse Navigator Kathleen Porter, RN, BS, who is coordinating the vigil at Winchester Hospital. “Bringing together so many people in the community for this important cause is rewarding and inspiring. We’re truly making a difference.”
